Tax law and taxation in Greece are issues of primary importance. The complex legislation is under constant amendment so that even the competent authorities are in doubt about what is in force especially in the recent period when several significant changes have occurred in the country's tax regime, the most structural of these changes being the replacement of the basic tax legislation. In place of Statute 2238/1994, which had been in force for 20 consecutive years, a new legislation, Statute 4172/2013 and for the first time the Code of Tax Procedure (Statute 4174/2013) was established.

The conservative approach limits the problems to a reasonable level but does not eliminate the risk of conflict with the tax authorities resulting in litigation.
